On April 3, 2018, Real Madrid travelled to Turin to face Juventus in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final. Ronaldo had already opened the scoring in the third minute when, in the 64th minute, he produced the moment that would come to define the match. Dani Carvajal delivered the ball into the penalty area and Ronaldo launched himself into the air, connecting with a spectacular overhead kick and sending the ball beyond legendary Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.
The athleticism and technique of the finish immediately made it one of the defining images of Ronaldo’s career. Even the home supporters recognized what they had witnessed. Juventus fans rose to applaud the opposing Real Madrid forward, an extraordinary gesture of respect that Ronaldo later described as an unforgettable moment.
Ronaldo scored twice that evening and Marcelo added the third as Real Madrid left Turin with a commanding 3–0 victory. The result ended Juventus’ 27-match, five-year unbeaten home run in European competition and gave Madrid a decisive advantage in the quarter-final tie.
